Survey reveals organizations’ security priorities for hybrid work

New global survey of 450 IT and security professionals reveals the full impact the pandemic has had on organizations and their security priorities for the hybrid workplace

SAN CARLOS, Calif., July 08, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Checkpoint® Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: CHKP), one of the world’s leading providers of cybersecurity solutions, revealed the results of a recent survey showing how organizations have been affected by the pandemic, particularly with regards to IT and security strategies .

Cyber attacks and threats have increased as hackers have taken advantage of the shift to remote and hybrid working, and this survey confirms that there is a growing shift towards cloud-based security and SASE solutions. As organizations allow their employees to access corporate resources remotely, the SASE model addresses the limitations of traditional network architectures, by converging networking and security in the cloud.

Uncovering how remote working has affected organizations’ security posture, operational overhead, and user impact, key findings from the survey of 450 global IT and security professionals include:

  • Remote work entails an increased risk: According to 45% of all respondents, companies are more exposed to cyber attacks when they switch to remote work. The industries that reported the highest level of cyber attacks were finance (54%), utilities (52%), and manufacturing (47%).

  • Administrative challenges: The top three issues that IT and security professionals face are changing performance (46%), resolving data privacy and sovereignty issues (42%), and supporting l ” remote access for unmanaged employee devices (40%).

  • Remote access scaling strategies: To meet the increased demand for remote work, 69% of security professionals say they are adding capacity on site; 66% are migrating to cloud-based security and, surprisingly, 36% are doing both.

  • Protect remotely accessible applications: When enabling remote access to corporate applications, 70% consider application security against cyber attacks and zero-day threats to be of great importance.

  • Adopt SASE technology: 94% are aware of the Secure Access Service Edge framework, but adoption is slow, 9% have already implemented it and 21% plan to do so.

“The shift to remote and hybrid working is one of the most significant changes to have taken place in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Many organizations have had to compromise network performance and protection in their distributed environments as they use several different point products, resulting in management complexity and fragmented visibility of threats, ”said Rafi Kretchmer, vice president of product marketing at Check Point Software. “This survey confirms that many organizations feel more at risk and that there is a growing shift towards cloud-based security. The SASE framework consolidates cloud services to minimize attack surfaces and improve user experience.

Interestingly, the survey reveals a dual adoption of cloud and on-premises security. For the sake of expediency, it may be easier to add capacity to current solutions, rather than removing them and replacing them with entirely new ones. Alternatively, this may reflect a phased approach to adopting cloud-based services or may be the result of data residency considerations.

Yet 66% use cloud-based security services to scale remote access and 63% of respondents see cloud-based security services as essential to scale remote access (including 83 % of senior executives). Now more than ever, due to the long-term effects remote working will have on data security needs and architecture, cloud-based security services and Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) technology are gaining more and more interest as they solve the pressing need to quickly deliver reliable connectivity and security to any user regardless of the target device, location or resource. With users working anywhere, cloud services improve performance and availability globally.
