SHU Board Honors Current and Former Members at Special Dinner Reception

Four members of the University of San Diego board of trustees were honored for their combined 45 years of service at a special board dinner at Hahn University Center on Thursday, May 5.

Past trustees Luis Maizel and James D. Power IV ’85 and outgoing trustees Sister Carolyn Osiek and Susan Mallory were all recognized and received gifts of appreciation at the event.

Maizel and Power were both awarded the title of director emeritus last December. Chairman of the Board, Donald R. Knauss, spoke about the unique distinction at the dinner.

“Tonight, we are honored to celebrate two of our former directors, who were recently awarded Director Emeritus,” Knauss said. “This special title is awarded to former trustees who have distinguished themselves through service to the university through volunteer leadership, extraordinary philanthropy, or distinguished contribution to the advancement of the institution.”

Emeritus Director Maizel served on the board for 15 years (2005-2020). He served as Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees for four years, chaired the Investment Committee for 12 years, and also served on the Finance and Executive Committees, as well as the Knauss School of Business Advisory Council for 14 years. years. The university named him a trustee emeritus in December 2021.

Power’s director emeritus served on the board for nine years (2011-2020). During his tenure, Power served for two years as chair of the campaign steering committee and the academic relations committee. He was a member of the finance committee for five years, of the student affairs committee for two years. In addition, he served on the Trustees Committee, where he served as Chair during his final year.

President Knauss also recognized and honored fellow trustees Osiek and Mallory, both of whom will be leaving the board at the end of this academic year.

Administrator Osiek served on the board for 14 years and served on the Academic Affairs Committee for eight years and the Student Affairs Committee for 13 years. She was also a member of the executive committee and served as secretary to the board of directors for five years.

Administrator Mallory served on the Board of Trustees for seven years and served on the Academic Affairs Committee for four years, the Audit Committee for three years, the Executive Compensation Committee for three years, the Investment Committee for two years and on the Student Affairs Committee for three years. . Mallory was also a member of the executive committee, serving as chair of the finance committee for three years.

“On behalf of the University of San Diego – and this Board of Trustees – thank you for your dedicated service,” Knauss said to applause from everyone in attendance.

Additionally, the board recognized and honored Carmen Vazquez, who served USD for 16 years as Vice President of Student Affairs. Vazquez was a co-founder of the Mission Integration Institute and an honorary member of the Alcala Chapter of the Mortar Board.

Vazquez also served on the Presidential Search Committee in 2015, which was responsible for hiring current SHU President James T. Harris III PhD; and co-chaired the Provost Search Committee in 2017, which was responsible for hiring USD Vice President and Provost Gail F. Baker PhD. She also served on the Envisioning 2024 strategic planning committee, which is tasked with creating a vision for the future of the university before its 75th anniversary in two years.

“Thank you for joining us tonight and for your many contributions to our USD community,” Knauss said.

Directors Massih Tayebi and Mark Bosco, who were unable to attend the event, are also leaving the board and will be honored at an upcoming event.
